Australian & New Zealand Rare Book School 2025

  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the deadline of 1 September 2024.

    Prospective attendees will be notified quickly of the outcome of their application. To secure a place, successful applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable NZ$100.00 deposit by the 1 September 2024 application deadline.

    Full payment is required by 1 October 2024.

    Advance Readings

    Some classes offer a list of advance readings that students are expected to complete prior to beginning the class.

    Schedule

    Provenance in Books will run 10am - 5pm Monday through to Friday.

    Experimental Letterpress will run 10am - 5pm Monday through to Wednesday.

    Reading Chinese will run 10am - 5pm Wednesday through to Friday.

    Tuition Costs

    Tuition for the 5 day course is NZ$1,100.00

    Tuition for the 3 day courses is NZ$850.00

  • The Venues

    Experimental Letterpress will be held in the Wai-te-ata Press, located in the Rankine Brown Building (Library), Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Kelburn Campus. The course will include a visit to the Heritage & Archive Collections, Tapuaka — JC Beaglehole Room.

    Reading Chinese will be held in the Stout Research Centre, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Kelburn Campus. The course will include visits to Tapuaka — JC Beaglehole Room, the Wai-te-ata Press’s Chinese Scholars’ Studio, and Wellington’s ‘Chinatown’.

    Provenance in Books will be held in the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa, 60 Molesworth St., Thorndon, Wellington.

    There are cafés and restaurants located within walking distance of the university and the national library.

    Transport

    Wellington International Airport is about 9.5 km from Victoria University of Wellington and the National Library of New Zealand with a drive time of around 20 to 25 minutes. A taxi fare from the airport to either venue is typically around NZ$50.00. Information on transport options is available on the airport website.


  • Accommodation

    There are numerous hotels and motels within walking distance of Victoria University of Wellington and the National Library. Please visit Visit Wellington or your favourite booking site to see a full range of accommodation in the city.

    Organisers of the event are happy to make recommendation for accommodation, cafes, restaurants, and most importantly, coffee.

    Weather

    It will be summertime, but Wellington does have a reputation as a windy city and for experiencing four seasons in one day! Average temperatures range from a minimum of 13°C to a maximum of 20°C.
